Brushwood panels come in 1.8m x 1.2m sizes which can be modified if required.
Panels are constructed by machine and are generally more compact and rigid than the handpacked method. They are quick and easy to install and require less framework. They are ideal where a simple level or square installation is required.
Panels are ideal for installation on pergola roofs or to cover existing fences or walls. Brushwood panels are quick to erect providing the situation is reasonably level and straight.
For sloping sites or difficult installations handpacked brush is cheaper, quicker and easier to erect and is much more flexible in design.
For developers requiring large metres of brush fencing installed in minimum time will opt for the brushwood panels because of their speed in installation. Panels can be erected at 3 times the speed of handpacked brush.
Installation
To install a brushwood panel fence, you must first install a frame for the panels to be fixed to. The frame can include timber or steel posts at 2.2m centres and a top rail.
Treated pine , brick or concrete can be used as a base for the brushwood panels and should be installed between the posts at a thickness of 100mm minimum.
The panels are then wired to one side of the frame. Once the panels have been installed the posts and top rail must be covered with a ‘roll top’ capping made from brushwood.
To form a capping or ‘roll top’ start with a bundle of about 12 sticks. Line them up so that all the stick ends are facing the same direction. Secure a wire around the roll near the stick end to secure it to the top of the fence, or fence post.
Next extend the roll by adding more brush. Insert the stick ends into the roll and bend around the green tops so that no ends or green tops can be seen. Wires should be secured around the capping at 280mm centres. Continue this process until the desired length has been reached, then neatly trim both ends.
